Aggitis Gorge

A few metres below the railway line that passes next to the Alistrati Caves lies the Angitis Gorge, the Vraous as the locals call it. It is located on the eastern side of the Serres prefecture and is 15 kilometres long.

The gorge lies between the Pangaio and Menikio mountains (17 km from the city of Drama) and extends from the village of Symvoli (Dam) to Angista Station. Due to some violent geological upheaval, a cataclysmic change occurred here that split the earth in two and allowed the water masses of Lake Prasias, which covered the fertile plain of Drama, to pass through, creating the Angitis Gorge. The entrance for visitors is from the Municipal District of Symvoli in the Municipality of Amphipolis.

The gorge is also known as 'Stena Petra' and 'Dioriga'. In three parts of the gorge, rock carvings have been found depicting camels, deer, horsemen holding the reins of horses and spears, as well as abstract designs. It is estimated that these rock carvings were made in the Bronze Age. The flora and fauna of the area are rich, while over the centuries several caves and arches have been formed along the gorge.

In recent years, sporting activities such as rafting, canoeing, kayaking, etc. have been developed on the river.
