Serres

Serres Prefecture is rich in history, starting from mythical times and through a long journey, which counts the periods: Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Turkish occupation, Revolution of 1821, Macedonian Struggle, Balkan Wars, World Wars I and II, reaching the present day, constituting one of the main cores of our country's economic, cultural, and tourist development, as well as Greece's gateway to the northern and eastern countries of Europe.

The fame of the monuments, sights, and areas of particular beauty has surpassed the borders of the Prefecture and is known throughout Greece.

Amphipolis is one of the most important sights of the Prefecture, as it is a highly valuable archaeological site, with the recently inaugurated Museum which is a jewel of the region with rare archaeological finds. In the archaeological site of Amphipolis, there is the “Lion of Amphipolis”, a symbol of pride and guardian of the ancient city. An excellent combination is the visit to the Archaeological Site and the Museum, which can be combined with a visit to the Cave of Alistrati.

Of lesser importance is the archaeological site of the community of Terpni, next to Nigrita, the visit to which can be combined both with balneotherapy at the nearby Thermal Springs of Nigrita, and with the folklore events of Gerakinia.

The Tower of Orestes on Koulas hill, which has stood imposingly at the top of the city for years, testifies to its long presence over the years.

The visitor can admire the wetland of Lake Kerkini, the beautiful forests of Lailias, the monasteries and Holy Churches of unique architectural, religious and historical value, remarkable monuments of Byzantine art as well as Turkish monuments such as the Bezesteni, the Gintzirli Mosque and the Ahmet Pasha Mosque, while they will gain excellent impressions from a tour of the natural beauties in the areas of Ag. Ioannis, Agioi Anargyroi and Chrysopigi.
