Monastery of Eikosifoinissa

About This Project

On the Serres – Kavala road, immediately after Kormista, on the border of the Serres – Kavala prefectures, on the northern side of the verdant Mount Pangaio, in a wonderful location, at an altitude of 753 m., lies the Holy Monastery of Panagia Eikosifoinissa. It is one of the two (2) holy sites of Eastern Macedonia, which continues to this day to be a pole of attraction for crowds of faithful, who come to venerate the “unmade icon of the Mother of God” and find peace in its serene environment.

The main Monastery in the centre has the imposing church of the Presentation of the Mother of God and includes the Hegoumeneion, the nuns' cells, the Archontariki, the chapel of Agia Varvara with the Holy Water, the Museum, the Refectory, the workshops and related facilities, while the entire complex is surrounded by a high wall.

In front of the Holy Monastery there is a square and near it is the monument to the 172 Nuns who were massacred in 1507 by the Turks. On the outer wall there is a marble shrine and nearby another shrine with a dome, under which there is holy water. Next is the Cemetery with the small church of the Holy Unmercenaries. In the southeast corner of the church stands a magnificent bell tower. Outside and above the Monastery walls, to the East, are the old windmill and the “Stasidion of Panagia” with a small shrine.
